Thermofoil is a surface finish commonly applied to bathroom and to kitchen cabinet doors. It is a plastic (PVC) material, which is thermoformed to the profile of an underlying core of medium-density fibreboard (MDF).
When we apply thermofoil to our custom kitchen cabinet doors, the result can be a solid colour or imitation wood grain. The cabinet boxes that accompany these doors can be finished in various materials, such as matching thermofoil, coordinating paint, and laminates. Thermofoil is available in a range of textures and sheen levels, the most popular choice being solid white with a matte sheen.
Polyvinyl Chloride is a “thermoplastic” material, which has to do with the way the plastic responds to heat. Thermoplastic materials become liquid at their melting point. A highly useful attribute of thermoplastics is that they can be heated to their melting point, cooled, and reheated again without significant degradation.
The medium-density fibreboard is an engineered wood product formed by breaking down hardwood and softwood residuals. These wood fibers are combined with a wax and or resin binder, and the resulting mulch is then pressed at a high temperature and pressure-formed into the panels that will be the basis of the cabinet doors in your home.
MDF custom kitchen cabinet doors are generally denser than wood products of a similar size and shape. Due to the nature of MDF manufacturing, they also do not contain knots, rings or other imperfections that natural woods or man-made wood products might suffer from.
Whatever design and size your kitchen cabinet doors may need, we can deliver. As kitchen cabinet door manufacturers, we will never alter your specifications to allow for PVC thickness. The PVC is between 9um (micrometers) and 20um thick, or .0000354 to .000787 inches thick. TDM uses a CNC machine to cut the doors within 1/10,000th of an inch. We then spray each door with a water-based, environmentally sensitive glue. The doors pass into the pressing area where they are placed onto our pin press, where the PVC is applied through extreme heat and pressure. The doors are then trimmed and wrapped, ready for the customer to pick them up and install them in their home.
